In English, it is known as the strawberry cactus. It forms low cushions of several dozen, and in nature even several hundred, soft, light-green stems with 7–12 ribs and a diameter of 3.5–15 cm; the longest stems sprawl and exceed one metre in length. The areoles bear 5–13 radial spines up to 4 cm long and 1–5 central spines, up to 8–9 cm long in the typical form, ranging in colour from white to almost black.

Growth and development

The species grows at a moderate to slow rate and usually branches before its first flowering. Young plants remain single-stemmed for several years, then produce offsets at the base. In a pot, after several years, clumps reach 20–40 cm in diameter and 15–30 cm in height; in the ground, in warm climates, they spread to a metre or more. The soft stems wrinkle during drought and regain their firmness after watering. The plant is long-lived and increases its number of stems each year.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers appear in early spring (in nature, from April to June) on the sides of the stems, below the tips. They are funnel-shaped, 7–12 cm in diameter, and pink, purple or magenta with a darker throat. They open before noon, close at night and last 2–4 days; they are pollinated by bees. The spherical or egg-shaped fruits, 2–3 cm in diameter, ripen to red in late summer. Their white or pale-pink flesh is edible and tastes reminiscent of strawberries – hence the common name.

Origin and natural habitat

This cactus is native to the Chihuahuan Desert. It grows in Texas (the Big Bend and Trans-Pecos regions) and New Mexico, as well as in northern and central Mexico – from Chihuahua and Coahuila to Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas – from sea level to around 1800 m above sea level, on limestone and gravelly hills, in dry scrub and grassy plains. Two subspecies are distinguished: the nominate subspecies with very long spines and subsp. brevispinus with spines shorter than 1.5 cm.

Cultivation requirements

The plant needs full sun and a very well-drained, mineral substrate – gravel, coarse sand, pumice or lava with a small amount of organic material. The roots rot easily, so water only after the substrate has dried out completely, usually every 1–3 weeks during the growing season. From October to March, keep the plant completely dry in a bright, cool place (0–10°C), which is essential for abundant flowering. Feed sparingly, 2–3 times per season, with a cactus fertiliser.

It is one of the more frost-hardy members of the genus: when kept dry and protected from rain, it tolerates short-term drops to around -12°C. Frost combined with moisture is fatal, so in the temperate climate of Europe, the safest approach is to grow it in a container overwintered in an unheated greenhouse or cool room; in the warmest regions, it can succeed in covered rock gardens.

Ornamental uses

One of the most spectacular flowering clumping cacti, valued for the size and colour of its flowers in relation to the plant’s size. It looks excellent in wide, shallow bowls, in greenhouses and on sunny windowsills, while in Mediterranean-style rock gardens it serves as a ground-cover plant.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Kaktusa-Enneacanthus-Echinocereus-Enneacanthus-1.webp?v=1790068432
