In nature, it reaches 3–5 m in height, forming a short trunk and a dense, candelabra-like crown of slightly curved, light green stems measuring 7–9 cm in diameter. The stems have 9–12 sharp ribs and gray spines with darker tips: one central spine up to 1.5 cm long and 6–8 radial spines. The species is valued as an ornamental plant and as a source of edible fruit, known in Mexico as chichituna.

Growth and development characteristics

For a columnar cactus, Polaskia chichipe grows at a moderate rate - faster than many globular species, but more slowly than in nature. In a pot, in the temperate climate of Europe, young plants grow by several centimeters per year, and a 30–50 cm-tall column is the result of several years of cultivation. The substrate must be very well drained - universal potting soil with a large proportion of pumice, lava or coarse sand, with a pH of about 6–7.5. The roots do not tolerate standing water, so during the growing season, water thoroughly but only after the soil has dried out completely.
