In nature, it grows as a shrub or tree, usually reaching up to 20 m in height (exceptionally 25 m) and a trunk diameter of up to 60 cm. It is distinguished by enormous variability in growth habit and by having two types of foliage on a single plant – making it one of the most commonly planted ornamental junipers and a classic bonsai species.

Growth and development characteristics

Young plants and the lower, shaded shoots of older specimens have prickly, needle-like leaves 5–12 mm long, arranged in whorls of three or oppositely. With age, small, scale-like leaves 1.5–3 mm long appear, closely appressed to the shoots. The bark is gray-brown to reddish-brown, longitudinally fissured and peeling off in thin strips.
