It forms a broad, umbrella-shaped crown with delicate, bipinnate foliage and, in the wild, usually reaches 6–20 m in height, with a trunk diameter of up to around 45 cm. However, the species is best known for its seeds: hard, glossy, intensely scarlet spheres measuring 8–10 mm in diameter, which remain on the tree for a long time after the twisted pods split open. This is why the plant is known in English as the red bead tree and is popular in the tropics as an ornamental and shade tree.

Growth and development

The red bead tree is a fast-growing species. After a somewhat slower first year, when the plant develops its root system, its growth rate increases considerably and can reach 2–2.3 m per year under favourable conditions, while trunk diameter increases by 2–2.5 cm annually. The leaves reach up to 40 cm in length and consist of 2–5 pairs of pinnate sections with elliptic leaflets 1.5–4.5 cm long. As a legume, it lives in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, allowing it to grow well even in poorer soils, and it resprouts readily after pruning.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are small, creamy white to yellowish, turning light orange with age, and are borne in slender, elongated racemes 9–26 cm long. They have a delicate fragrance and are readily visited by insects; in the tropics, the tree flowers from spring to late summer. The fruit is a flat, curved pod 15–25 cm long that twists into a spiral and splits open when ripe, revealing 8–12 hard, lens-shaped, scarlet seeds. The seeds have nearly identical mass, which is why they served as jewellers' weights in India for centuries. When grown in a container in Europe, flowering requires a mature specimen several years old and a long, warm summer.

Origin and natural habitat

The natural range of Adenanthera pavonina includes India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, southern China, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and northern Australia. It inhabits lowland deciduous forests up to around 300–400 m above sea level, on soils ranging from deep and well-drained to shallow and rocky, in humid tropical climates with annual rainfall of 2000–6000 mm and temperatures of 12–36 °C. Planted throughout the tropical zone, it has become naturalised in more than 60 countries and is sometimes considered an invasive species.

Cultivation requirements

The red bead tree needs full sun; it tolerates light partial shade, but then grows more sparsely and flowers less profusely. The substrate should be moderately fertile and well-drained while still retaining moisture, with a pH of 5–7 (it tolerates 4.5–7.5). The optimum growth temperature is 22–28 °C. The species is sensitive to frost: sources give a minimum of around +2 °C and USDA zones 10–12 for outdoor cultivation. In Europe's temperate climate, it is grown exclusively as a container plant: from late spring to early autumn on a terrace or in the garden, and in winter in a bright room where the temperature does not fall below 10–15 °C. During the growing season, water regularly, allowing the top layer of the substrate to dry out; reduce watering in winter.

Older specimens tolerate temporary drought, while young plants need evenly moist conditions. The branches are susceptible to wind damage, so the site should be sheltered. Moderate fertilisation is sufficient, using a low-nitrogen fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. The tree tolerates pruning well and can be trained as a small tree or bonsai.

Ornamental uses

In the tropics, it is one of the most popular street and shade trees, valued for its open crown and red seeds, which have been used in jewellery for centuries. In Europe, it is an attractive plant for conservatories, greenhouses, winter gardens and bright interiors, and a decorative terrace plant in summer. Its mimosa-like leaves give it an exotic appearance, its rapid growth produces an impressive small tree after just a few seasons, and the species is also often trained as a bonsai.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Gruczolkowca-PawiegoAdenanthera-Pavonina-1.webp?v=1790068257
