In nature, it usually reaches 10–12 m in height, and its trunk can reach 50 cm in diameter. It is distinguished by pink to lilac flowers that appear on leafless shoots during the dry season, as well as by its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodule bacteria.

Growth and development characteristics

The species has a short, often slightly twisted trunk and smooth bark ranging in color from grayish white to reddish brown. The leaves are imparipinnate, 15–40 cm long, and consist of 7–17 leaflets measuring 3–6 cm in length. In a tropical climate, an established tree can grow by as much as 3 m per year. During the dry season, it sheds its leaves, while with constant soil moisture it may remain semi-evergreen. It tolerates hard pruning well and quickly regrows from the trunk.

Flowering and fruiting

The papilionaceous flowers, about 2 cm long, are borne in clusters measuring 5–12 cm in length. They range in color from pale pink to lilac, with a light yellow spot at the base of the standard petal. Flowering begins after the shortest day of the year, when the tree loses its leaves. The fruit is a flat pod 10–15 cm long, containing 4–10 brown seeds; it ripens within about 40–55 days after flowering.

Origin and natural habitat

According to POWO (Kew), its natural range extends from Mexico to Colombia. The tree grows from sea level to approximately 1200 m above sea level, in a climate with an average annual temperature of 20–29°C, rainfall of 900–1500 mm, and a dry season lasting several months. It grows best in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral reaction; sources report tolerance of a pH range of approximately 4.5–8.5. It tolerates a light, brief frost, but not prolonged freezing conditions - in cultivation, it is generally assigned to USDA zones 10–11. In Poland, it is grown in a container: from late spring to early autumn, it can be kept on a sunny terrace, while in winter it should be placed in a bright room, preferably at a temperature above 15°C.

During the growing period, water regularly once the top layer of the soil has dried, avoiding waterlogging.
