Koch and Augustinus (synonym: Philodendron mirificum). In nature, it grows as a hemiepiphyte, climbing tightly up tree trunks, and more rarely as a large terrestrial perennial. Its distinguishing feature is its D-shaped petioles with a wavy, ridged wing along the edge - hence the epithet “pterotum”, meaning “winged”. The leaf blades are large and ovate, with a heart-shaped base and a suddenly pointed apex, dark green on the upper surface and lighter underneath.

Growth and development characteristics

Mature plants have petioles 47–111 cm long and leaf blades measuring 36–93 × 22–84 cm; the entire leaf reaches 0.5–1.2 m in nature. Short internodes form a compact rosette of leaves pressed against the support. Seedlings have small, heart-shaped leaves on smooth petioles - the winging develops gradually, usually after 2–4 years of climbing the support. The plant grows moderately quickly and is long-lived.

Flowering and fruiting

In nature, it flowers from May to August, at the beginning of the rainy season, producing 2–4 inflorescences in each leaf axil. The spathe is 11–29 cm long: the blade is light green, greenish white inside, and the tube is red to dark violet. The spadix is white, and the ripe berries are light brown to white. When grown indoors, only large, several-year-old specimens flower.

Origin and natural habitat

The species occurs from Nicaragua through Costa Rica to central Panama, on Atlantic and Pacific slopes. It inhabits tropical moist and rainforests from sea level to approximately 1900 m above sea level, most abundantly below 700 m - in an environment with consistently high humidity and temperatures that rarely fall below 18–20 °C. Use an airy growing medium: bark, peat or coco coir, perlite and charcoal. Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist, with air humidity of 60–80 %. The species cannot tolerate frost - the temperature should not fall below 15 °C, and outdoors it survives only in USDA zone 11. In the temperate climate of Europe, it is grown exclusively in a container: on a sheltered terrace in summer and in a warm room or greenhouse in winter. A moss-covered support is essential, allowing the plant to attach with its adventitious roots.

This is a collector's species, valued for its unusually winged petioles and monumental leaves - an impressive specimen plant for a bright interior, conservatory or greenhouse. Like all philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalates and is poisonous to humans and pets.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Filodendrona-PterotumPhilodendron-Pterotum-3.webp?v=1790020399
