In nature, it grows as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte, climbing tree trunks with adventitious roots to a height of several metres, or even around 10 metres. Its distinguishing features are large, leathery, green to greyish-green leaves with deeply cut margins (Latin “lacerum” - ragged), reaching 50 cm in length and approximately 20–25 cm in width.

Growth and development characteristics

The Lacerum Philodendron grows moderately quickly to quickly. Its stems are climbing, with internodes approximately 4–8 cm long, and adventitious roots emerge from each node, allowing the plant to attach itself to a support. The leaves of young plants are almost entire or only wavy; the characteristic incisions appear with age and eventually extend roughly halfway to the midrib. Smooth, rounded petioles grow to 20–35 cm long. With a stable moss support, the plant forms a several-metre-high wall of greenery within a few years; without support, it grows more slowly and produces smaller leaves.

Flowering and fruiting

The inflorescence consists of a spadix surrounded by a spathe and usually appears in groups of 2–3 at one node, on peduncles approximately 20–30 cm long. The slender spathe is 10–15 cm long; its tube is purple on the inside, while the open part is sulphur-yellow to ivory-coloured. The approximately 10 cm long spadix is pollinated by beetles in nature; after pollination, small berries develop. Indoors, only large, mature specimens flower.

Origin and natural habitat

The species is endemic to the Greater Antilles: it occurs in Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It was described by Nikolaus Jacquin as Arum lacerum, and in 1829 Heinrich Wilhelm Schott transferred it to the genus Philodendron. It grows in humid tropical forests, in the shade of tall trees, with consistently high humidity and year-round warmth; introduced, among other places, to Hawaii and the Philippines, it has become naturalised in some areas.

Cultivation requirements

In Europe's temperate climate, the Lacerum Philodendron is grown exclusively as a potted plant indoors, in a heated room, greenhouse or conservatory. It needs bright, filtered light; strong sunlight scorches the leaf blades, while deep shade causes elongated internodes. The optimal temperature is 20–30 °C; in winter, it should not fall below 13–15 °C, while temperatures around 10 °C cause damage to the plant.

The growing medium should be loose, well-aerated and rich in humus - a mixture of peat or compost with bark, perlite and coconut fibre works well. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist, but never waterlogged; excess water leads to root rot. High air humidity (60–80 %) promotes large, deeply divided leaves. During the growing season, fertilise every 2–4 weeks with diluted fertiliser for foliage plants; in winter, reduce watering and stop fertilising.

Ornamental uses

An impressive plant for bright living rooms, offices, winter gardens and greenhouses, valued by collectors for its unusual leaf shape.
