It is a climbing hemiepiphyte from the humid forests of Central America, climbing tree trunks. The species is prized for its large, glossy, heart-shaped to ovate leaves, 40–76 cm long, whose margins in mature plants split between the veins, giving the blade an almost pinnate appearance. Hence the name - the Latin “findens” means “splitting”.

Growth and development characteristics

The plant produces a thick, glossy stem with internodes 4–9 cm long and 2–4 cm in diameter. Young specimens have small, entire, heart-shaped leaves; only after gaining support do the blades grow and begin to split. The petioles, sharply D-shaped in cross-section, usually measure 43–119 cm. Indoors, growth is moderate to fast - with high humidity and a moss-covered support, the plant produces several leaves per season and becomes an impressive climber after several years, with its height limited by the length of the support. It is long-lived.

Flowering and fruiting

Inflorescences appear only on mature, climbing plants - two per leaf axil. The spathe is 13–23 cm long, green on the outside, greenish white inside, and red in the tube; it surrounds the spadix of tiny flowers. In nature, it flowers mainly in May and July, although the season is probably longer. The fruits are quadrangular berries about 4 mm in diameter, scented - according to the authors of the description - like kiwi fruit. Flowering is rare in pots; the plant is grown for its foliage.

Origin and natural habitat

Its range includes Costa Rica, Panama and western Colombia (Valle del Cauca). The plant grows from sea level to about 1400 m above sea level, in tropical moist forest and premontane rainforest, mainly on the Atlantic side of the mountains. It is usually a hemiepiphyte climbing tree trunks, and less often grows on steep, moist slopes. The habitat has consistently high humidity, filtered light beneath the forest canopy and warmth all year round.

Cultivation requirements

The species does not tolerate frost or cold - in the temperate climate of Europe, it is a houseplant or greenhouse plant (USDA zones 10–12). Optimal temperatures are 18–28°C; below 12–15°C growth stops, while temperatures around 5°C damage the leaves. Choose a bright position without direct midday sun - filtered light near an east- or west-facing window. Use an airy, humus-rich substrate: bark, coconut fibre, perlite and compost. Water when the top 2–3 cm of the substrate has dried out, less often in winter; waterlogging causes root rot.

Air humidity of 60–80% and a moss pole or climbing board are crucial - without support, the leaves remain small and entire. Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during the growing season, using half the recommended dose. In summer, the plant can be kept in a shady, sheltered spot on a terrace, but it must be brought indoors before cool nights.

Ornamental use

A collector's species, rarely available for sale, valued in aroid enthusiasts' collections.
