It forms a low, dense, cushion-shaped shrub, 10–60 cm tall, whose stems spread sideways and root where they touch the ground, so a single plant can eventually cover 0.5–1 m of surface area. The small, cylindrical, grey-green leaves, up to 2.5 cm long, are covered with shiny bladder cells that look like drops of dew, while young shoots bear stiff bristles, to which the species owes the epithet hispidum (“hispid”). Its greatest ornamental feature is the profusion of star-shaped flowers in purple and magenta with a light centre.

Growth and development

The plant grows at a moderate to fairly fast rate: young shoots grow upright at first, then bend and trail, forming a dense mat. According to the RHS, it reaches its full size after 2–5 years; the clump then grows to 30–50 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide. Thanks to its rooting stems, the clump is constantly rejuvenated, while pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact habit.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers, 2–3 cm in diameter, have numerous narrow, satin-shiny petals and open only in full sun, closing at night and on cloudy days. In its native range, it flowers in late winter and spring; in cultivation in Europe, the main flowering period falls in late spring and summer, often with repeat flowering into autumn. At peak flowering, the flowers almost completely conceal the leaves. They are a valuable source of pollen and nectar for bees.

Origin and natural habitat

The species is native to Namibia, South Africa’s Cape Provinces and the Free State. Its centre of distribution is the winter-rainfall Succulent Karoo biome, where it grows on rocky outcrops, stony slopes, dry scrub and disturbed ground, including poor and saline soils. It has locally naturalised from cultivation in the Mediterranean Basin, including Spain, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Italy.

Cultivation requirements

Full sun and very free-draining, mineral soil are essential: sandy or gravelly, low in organic matter, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. During the growing season, water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out completely; the plant tolerates prolonged drought but does not tolerate waterlogging. Reduce watering to a minimum in winter. In dry soil, brief frosts of around -2 to -4 °C are usually harmless, but wet frost damages the stems, so in temperate European climates the species is best grown in a container and overwintered in a bright, cool (5–10 °C), almost dry room.

In a pot, use a wide, shallow container with drainage holes and a cactus mix amended with grit. Fertilise no more than twice per season with diluted succulent fertiliser; excess nitrogen produces weak stems and fewer flowers.

Ornamental uses

In warm, dry regions, it is one of the most spectacular ground-cover plants for slopes, walls, gravel gardens and coastal gardens. In cooler parts of Europe, it is impressive in pots, bowls and hanging baskets, where flower-covered trailing stems form a cascade. It combines well with Delosperma, Lampranthus and low-growing echeverias, and is also a nectar-rich plant.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Drosantemum-SzczeciniastegoDrosanthemum-Hispidum-1.webp?v=1790068022
