Each season, hollow, four-angled stems with thickened nodes emerge from underground tubers, closely resembling bamboo poles. In cultivation, the plant usually reaches 2–6 m in height, while in the mountains of Central America it grows up to 8–10 m. Large, pinnately divided leaves give it an exotic character, and in autumn, pendant lavender-pink flower heads appear at the tops of the stems.

Growth and development

The tree dahlia is one of the fastest-growing garden plants. In midsummer, it can grow by as much as 30 cm per week, reaching its full seasonal height within 4–5 months. The stems are several centimetres in diameter, reaching approximately 10 cm in older specimens, and may become partially woody at the base. In frost-free climates, they survive for several seasons, whereas in colder regions the above-ground part dies after the first frost and the plant regrows from its tubers in spring, becoming more impressive year after year.

Flowering and fruiting

The flower heads are 7.5–15 cm in diameter, hang downward and resemble bells, hence the English name bell tree dahlia. The typical colour is lavender or lilac-pink with a yellow centre; white and double forms are also known. The giant dahlia is a short-day plant - it sets buds only when the nights become long, which is why it flowers in late autumn, usually from the end of October to December. In regions with early frosts, flowering often does not have time to develop, and the plant is grown mainly for its habit. The flowers are a valuable source of nectar for bees.

Origin and natural habitat

The species originates from the mountains of Mexico and Central America, with its range extending to Colombia and Ecuador. It grows at elevations of 1200–3800 m above sea level, most often between 1500 and 1700 m, in damp meadows, on steep slopes and at the edges of pine-oak forests, in porous, sandy-clay soils. The cool nights and humid summers of the highlands explain why it tolerates neither drought nor severe frost.

Cultivation requirements

The giant dahlia needs a sunny, warm position sheltered from the wind - its tall, hollow stems break easily in gusts, so it is advisable to tie them to sturdy stakes. The soil should be fertile, rich in humus, consistently slightly moist but well-drained; standing water leads to tuber rot. During the growing season, the plant requires abundant watering, while nitrogen should be reduced in late summer.

At temperatures below 0 °C, the stems are damaged by frost, and the tubers survive outdoors only in USDA Zone 8 and warmer, under a thick mulch layer. In the temperate climate of Europe, the tubers are dug up after the first frosts and stored in a cool place at approximately 5–10 °C, like those of garden dahlias. Growing it in a container requires a very large pot and limits growth; an alternative is a tall greenhouse or conservatory, where the plant has a chance to flower fully.

Ornamental use

The tree dahlia is a plant with a strikingly architectural character - in a single season, it creates a tropical-looking green wall, ideal as a backdrop for a flower bed or as a living screen. In mild regions, its November flowering is one of the last colourful accents of the season.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0939/2649/0440/files/Nasiona-Dalii-olbrzymiejDahlia-Imperialis-5.webp?v=1790069190
