Formerly described as Datura suaveolens, it is known as “angel's trumpet”. In warm climates, it forms a shrub 3–5 m tall, while in a pot it usually reaches 1.5–2.5 m. Its ornamental feature is its huge, pendant, trumpet-shaped flowers, 24–32 cm long, which are fragrant in the evening. Warning: all parts of the plant, including the seeds, are highly poisonous.

Growth and development characteristics

Brugmansia suaveolens grows very quickly: under favorable conditions, a young plant reaches about 0.9–1.5 m in its first season. The stem grows singly, then branches after reaching approximately 80–150 cm, and begins flowering from that point - usually in the second or third year. The leaves are large, oval and softly hairy, reaching 25–30 cm in length. The plant is long-lived and can grow in a pot for decades.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers hang down or spread almost horizontally, with a long, narrow tube and a calyx with five teeth. The botanical form blooms white; pink and yellowish cultivars are also known. Flowering occurs in waves from midsummer to autumn; a mature specimen can open dozens of flowers at once. The fragrance intensifies at dusk because moths pollinate the plant in nature. The fruits are smooth, spindle-shaped capsules containing numerous angular seeds.

Origin and natural habitat

The natural range of Brugmansia suaveolens included Brazil's Atlantic Forest belt from southern Bahia to northern Rio Grande do Sul, where the species grew below 1000 m above sea level along rivers and at forest edges in a warm, humid climate. According to the IUCN, all Brugmansia species are now extinct in the wild and survive exclusively in cultivation; as an ornamental plant, it has become established in many tropical regions around the world.

Growing requirements

Brugmansia needs a warm, bright location sheltered from the wind, preferably in full sun with light shade during hot afternoons. The growing medium should be fertile, rich in humus and well drained, with a pH of 5.5–7.5. This plant has an enormous need for water and fertilizer: in summer, a potted plant often requires daily watering and regular fertilization, while a fertilizer with increased potassium content supports bud formation. It does not tolerate frost and suffers below 5 °C, so in the temperate climate of Europe it is grown in containers approximately 60 cm in diameter.

Before frosts, prune the plant and move it to a bright room at a temperature of 7–12 °C or to a dark, cool basement, reducing watering to a minimum. In spring, it can be moved outdoors again and quickly rebuilds its crown.

Ornamental use and safety

Brugmansia suaveolens is one of the most spectacular container plants for terraces and patios, where its evening fragrance is most noticeable; it can be trained as a shrub or a standard form.
