It is distinguished by its bottle-shaped, strongly thickened trunk with smooth, light-gray bark and a loose, irregular crown. In nature, it usually reaches 5–20 m in height, while the largest specimens, according to some sources, reach around 30 m. The palmate leaves consist of 5–7 leaflets, while the large, fragrant flowers with dark red petals open at dusk.

Growth and development characteristics

Its growth rate is moderate to fast - more vigorous than that of the African baobab. In a container in a temperate climate, it grows much more slowly. It is long-lived and enters a dormant period every year, shedding its leaves for several months.

Flowering and fruiting

The flowers are large and fragrant, usually dark red and more rarely yellowish; they open at dusk and fade by morning, and are pollinated by long-tongued hawkmoths.
