It belongs to the group of wild forms of Musa acuminata, closely related to the var. zebrina variety from Java. In nature, it usually grows to 2–2.7 m in height, while in a pot it can be kept at 1–1.5 m. It is distinguished by its decorative foliage: green leaf blades with dark red, burgundy spots and a purple leaf underside.

Growth and development characteristics

This is a herbaceous plant - the “trunk” is actually a pseudostem made of tightly rolled leaf sheaths. In wild forms from Java, it reaches 6–9 cm in diameter and may be brown-spotted. The lance-shaped leaves grow up to 1.3–1.5 m long and 26–34 cm wide. Under favourable conditions, the plant grows quickly and eventually forms a clump of suckers emerging from the rhizome. The leaves of young plants have the most intense colouring; in older specimens, the red spots may become less pronounced.

Flowering and fruiting

A mature pseudostem produces a hanging inflorescence up to 1.1 m long, ending in an ovoid, dark purple male bud. The bunch usually contains 5–8 rows (“hands”) of small fruits approximately 5–6.5 cm long. Each fruit contains several dozen hard, black seeds, so despite being edible, this is primarily an ornamental plant. After fruiting, the pseudostem dies, and suckers take its place.

Origin and natural habitat

The typical form (var. zebrina) comes from Java, where it grows in open habitats at an elevation of 250–900 m above sea level. In Sumatra, banana plants with red-spotted leaves are cultivated as ornamentals. The species Musa acuminata is one of the wild ancestors of edible bananas and grows naturally in the humid tropics of Southeast Asia, often as a pioneer species in exposed areas.

Cultivation requirements

It grows best in a bright location with diffused light or light partial shade; overly intense sunlight may reduce the red colouring. It is not frost-hardy: the leaves are damaged at temperatures close to 0°C, and growth stops below approximately 10°C.
