The plant forms a powerful, open rosette of 30–50 thick, fleshy leaves that are gray-green or bluish-green, emerging from a short trunk. A mature specimen reaches 2–2.5 m in height and 2.5–4.5 m in diameter, while a single leaf measures 1.5–2.5 m long and 20–30 cm wide at the base. This species is known exclusively from cultivation - for centuries it has been grown in central Mexico as maguey pulquero, a source of sap used to make pulque.

Growth and development

For such a massive plant, Agave mapisaga grows relatively quickly, especially during the warm season and when water is available. For the first few years, young seedlings resemble small, rigid rosettes, and only after several seasons do they begin to gain significant mass. In its native climate, it reaches its full size after 7–15 years; in cooler regions of Europe, where the growing season is shorter, this process takes longer. The plant is monocarpic - the main rosette dies after flowering once, but it usually produces root offshoots beforehand, which take its place.

Flowering and fruiting

A mature Agave mapisaga produces a huge, branched flower stalk in the form of a panicle, reaching 5–9 m in height. Clusters of yellow, nectar-rich flowers appear on the horizontally spreading side branches and are visited in Mexico by bats, birds and insects. After flowering, capsules containing flat, black seeds develop, and some clones also form bulbils on the inflorescence. In cultivation outside Mexico, flowering is rare and occurs only after a dozen or even several dozen years.

Origin and natural habitat

Agave mapisaga was described by William Trelease in 1920 based on cultivated plants from the Mexican Highlands. No wild populations of the species are known - it is believed to be an ancient domesticated form, selected over generations by farmers for its size and sap yield. It is cultivated on flat and gently sloping terrain at elevations of 1900–2700 m above sea level, mainly in the states of Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Mexico and Puebla, in a semi-arid climate with cool, dry winters and rainy summers.

Cultivation requirements

Agave mapisaga needs full sun; only the youngest plants may initially grow in light partial shade. The substrate must be very well drained - a mixture of garden or universal potting soil with a high proportion of coarse sand, gravel or pumice. Water moderately in summer, after the substrate has dried out; gradually reduce watering in autumn, and water only occasionally in winter. Excess moisture in cool conditions is the most common cause of rot. The plant tolerates brief temperature drops to around -6/-7 °C (USDA zone 9a), provided the substrate is dry.

In Europe's temperate climate, giant agave is grown in a container, which is placed on a terrace or in the garden during summer and moved for winter to a bright, cool room with a temperature of 2–10 °C. Permanent planting outdoors is possible only in the warmest Mediterranean or Atlantic regions. Given its eventual size, it is worth providing a wide, heavy pot and plenty of space around the plant.

Ornamental use

Agave mapisaga is a striking specimen plant - even a young potted plant attracts attention with the architecture of its broad, arching leaves.
