It is fully frost-hardy, long-lived and self-sufficient: it spreads by runners and self-seeds, gradually occupying places where other ornamental plants struggle, namely the shade beneath trees and shrubs. The flowers are small (1.5–2 cm), but their fragrance is exceptionally strong - this is the same violet used to make perfumes and the famous candied violets of Toulouse.

Unlike pansies and horned violets, it does not require annual sowing or maintenance. They need 4 weeks at a temperature of 0–5°C to germinate - natural winter takes care of this for us. Seedlings appear only in spring, in March – April. An alternative for spring sowing: mix the seeds with damp sand and keep them in the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks, then sow at 15–18°C.

Pricking out: when the seedlings develop 2–3 true leaves, transplant them into separate 7–8 cm pots or directly into a nursery bed.

Planting out (April): plant young plants in their permanent position at a spacing of 30 × 30 cm, in fertile, humus-rich and consistently slightly moist soil.
